the James study : week 2 // with INTO HIM SEE guest blog

James Study

READ: JAMES 1:19-27

go find a mirror. like, a tall mirror, where you can see all of you.
got one?

now take a good, long look. what do you see? what are the parts of you that you love? what about the parts you feel not-so-happy about?

here’s something that I’m sure, if you grew up in a church setting, you’ve heard a thousand times. if you haven’t, if you’re new to the whole Christian scene, this might be new for you. you’re made in the image of God. there is something about you that reflects the Creator of the universe in a way that no one else can reflect Him. it doesn’t matter if you believe in Him or not. it doesn’t matter if you’re angry at Him or not. You reflect Him.
crazy, right?

if you do know and have a personal relationship with Jesus, you also have His Holy Spirit inside of you, guiding you, leading you, encouraging and comforting you.
look at yourself a little closer. do you feel different inside?

now walk away from the mirror. it’s harder to remember that image of God in you, isn’t it? it’s harder to picture when you’re not staring right at it. as the day goes on and on, it becomes harder and harder to remind yourself of the deep truths. it’s easy to forget.

This is where the Holy Spirit comes in. He reminds you that you bear this image of God, that you have this responsibility to bear it well, that you can bear it well, because of He who is in you!

this is important: the image of God in us gives no room for pride. we are to “…receive with meekness the implanted word…” (verse 21). His image in us is the only thing worthwhile in us. He is what makes us worthy! He is what makes us able to bear His image!

How do we bear it well?
we can’t simply be satisfied by looking into the image of God and then walking away and living the same way we always have…
we bear it well by, as verse 25 says “but the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets, but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.”
we have to go and let it permeate every area of our lives. we have to live in remembrance of this.

this is the core of this passage. the rest simply revolves around this key point, it hinges on it.

PONDER:
bear the image well by living in remembrance of Him who is in you.

MEMORIZE:
But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets, but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.
James 1:25
